Without history, no Rebel Cactus

04 November 2020

Okay, we may not have been there when it all began in 1510, but it did make Rebel Cactus what it is today. Indeed, from that moment, the first step was taken toward the children's smartwatch, the first step toward the Rebel Cactus Play.

Without history no Rebel Cactus

The one and only children's smartwatch Rebel Cactus Play is really coming. At least we can't wait anymore and hopefully neither can you! With this wonderful prospect on the horizon, it might also be a nice time to look back.
Okay, we may not have been there when it all began in 1510, but it did make Rebel Cactus what it is today. After all, from that moment the first step was taken toward the children's smartwatch, the first step toward the Rebel Cactus Play.

The First Watch

We owe this to Peter Henlein, the maker of the pocket watch. It is said to have taken place in 1510. However, there is no evidence that it was actually in this year. Anyway, the watch was born.
Then came Philipp Melanchthon, the man who provided a reformation that would have consequences to this day. Not because he wrote the Augburg Confession, translated the Bible into German or succeeded Martin Luther as leader of the Reformation in the 16th century. Okay, that wasn't entirely insignificant either. No, but this Mr. Melanchthon invented the table watch.
Then you begin to ask yourself ... A table watch, what good is that? Well, surely this was nicely the first dated portable clock ever. This portable clock had no minute or second hand and winding it up was the recharging of today. Yeah, that was pretty primitive all around.

Just a quick look

Hundreds of years later, in 1863, came another new invention; the wristwatch. The inventor of the wristwatch, Patek Philippe, created this accessory as a gift for the Hungarian Countess Koscowicz. From then on, as we are all used to, the watch was created.
In 1957, the American Hamilton came up with the first electric version. This became a success partly because the King of Rock, Elvis Presley, wore it in the movie Blue Hawaii.

Watch this… this is smart!

A little later, in 1982 the first smartwatch was a reality. Seiko came out with a watch that could store 24 characters. Basically, you didn't have much use for it yet, but a smartwatch is a smartwatch....

Seiko came out 8 years later with the Seiko Receptor. This watch allowed you to communicate with the outside world. See, that was already starting to look like something!
From then on came one innovation after another. In 1991 came touchscreen on a watch, in 1994 came a model with built-in
remote control and in 1999 Samsung came out with the SPH-WP10. Now you could also make phone calls with a watch, or call watch!
IBM came out with the first computer-powered watch in 2000. Microsoft added to that in 2004. With this smart device you could read your mail, send MSN messages and follow the latest news with it.
In 2006, Sony Ericsson added Bluetooth, and from then on the big brands entered the picture. Apple, for example, came out with its first smartwatch in 2011; an iPod Nano that you could wear as a watch. And in 2015 came the well-known Apple watch, Apple's smartwatch that rocked the entire world.

Rebel Cactus Play
And now 5 years later, in 2020, it's our turn. The first, only real kids smartwatch with GPS and parent app in the Netherlands. Rebel Cactus is more than a calling watch, because of all the cool apps, like whatsapp, spotify and Insta. But also with smart educational games, like learning math and tables and more. Count your steps with the pedometer. Change watch bands and style your watch to match your outfit. And Rebel Cactus Play smartwatch for kids is also waterproof.
History made Rebel Cactus, but the future we make.
At least the first step has been taken....
